By living in the present, we can reduce stress and worry, primarily by redirecting our focus away from things we cannot control. We can also increase our productivity and engagement with others, as well as focussing on reaching goals and emphasising the positive aspects of our life.

Enjoying the Present

Below are some tips and tools to enable you to enjoy and succeed in living in the present:

Consider what you find necessary in your life, and discard things which do not bring you joy. This expands into the realm of material possessions as well as the discarding of thoughts which do not serve us or help in our journey to live in the present. If we feel bogged down by negative people, negative ideas or possessions which don’t make us happy, the best way of living in the present is to discard them. This seems hard and harsh, but it will, in the long run, help you find peace and improve your positivity.

Asserting positivity is also essential to living in the present. Taking time to appreciate and enjoy moments as they happen is both important for our stability and provides us with that satisfied, nostalgic feeling when we feel the good in our life coming together. Often, we find it far easier to dwell and commiserate the negative moments we face, but if we celebrated positivity when it occurred nearly so vehemently, we would find ourselves far more grateful for the present far more often.

Healing past traumas is vital to living in the present. While it may seem counterintuitive to look back over old wounds, unless we can heal and move past what has caused us pain, we will find that we cannot ever live truly in the present. By using a technique such as guided meditation, or through counselling or holistic therapy, we can seek to derive the root of our problems and establish how we can heal them. This is important to moving into a life that focusses on the present.

Mindfulness exercises will provide us with a far greater appreciation and alignment with the present. These do not stop at guided meditation, learning simply how to control the breath or the thoughts can enable a far greater appreciation for the present moment and the way we dwell on the past or the future. We can gain a greater understanding of nature and the world around us, including other people, if we engage in mindful exercises, they allow us to connect authentically with the present and truly feel, rather than moving so fast that we cannot stop.
