Contentment

Contentment is the natural state at which all human beings are meant to be in. However along the way, we were taught by advertising, our parents and society that it is bad to be okay and that we need to do things in order to feel content. This is the wrong way to go about it and can lead people into the exact opposite of what their upbringing was meant to achieve.

What is Contentment?

“Health is the most precious gain and contentment the greatest wealth”

Being content in life is simply a mental state. A state of satisfaction that can only be achieved from being at ease in your body and mind. Contentment occurs when you have fully accepted your situation in life and understand that how you feel now is how you will feel if you do achieve your dreams and goals. It is a baseline, it is not happiness, this is a temporary high we experience now and again. It is being ok with all the emotions we go through the highs and the lows. When you become content you become unattached to the bad and the good and simply allow them to be without judgement or question.

Contentment is what everybody is striving for, although some don’t even know it. They get so caught up in getting better and achieving things that they don’t realize these things won’t make us content. They are external and the only gateway to contentment is through the internal. Contentment can be achieved by anyone regardless of their circumstances. Many extraordinary people throughout history understood contentment as the ultimate goal.

From Siddhartha to John Stuart Mill, they believed that nothing is worth doing unless you are already internally content. It is not about being happy with what you achieve but being happy with what you have, this is true contentment. Plus having this baseline means that ambitions and goals are much more likely to happen. For example a strong family unit, a strong local community, and satisfaction of life’s basic needs. This is an upward spiral where being content improves your external life continuously.

A Content Life

Being content will always benefit your life in endless ways. Whatever happens on the outside can never permanently affect the way you feel internally. Why not experience the best things in life while already feeling amazing and not be worried about losing them.

Benefits of contentment:

  • Healthy eating habits

  • Improved mood

  • Increased vitality

  • Desire for health

  • Improved finances

  • Improved self-image

  • Improved Relationships

As you become more content with yourself you will learn to be more satisfied with healthier food, and less of it. This is through the feeling of already feeling good and not wanting to use food as an escape. This will improve health and allow you to lose any excess pounds. You will find more pleasure with much less like reading, chatting with friends or exercising. You will not feel the urge to splurge on things to make yourself feel better, debt will begin to diminish as you will be able to enjoy yourself with less material items.

You will feel more at ease simply being yourself, allowing you to feel more satisfied with who you are and what you do. This means you don’t need to purchase self-improvement programs, books, and videos that only optimize the state of not being content. Start with the cause and you will not need any advice to feel better. You will let go of the need to achieve goals at work, the gym or the home. This does not mean you won’t achieve anything but you will attack life from a state of inspiration this could mean working on an entirely different set of goals that feel much more authentic to your true self.

Contentment is the basis of self-acceptance, your insecurities will dissolve and people’s opinions will have less of an effect on you. It is a very joyful state to live in.

Life Without Contentment

Transversely, If you are not living contently right now you are on one of two paths. You are either fighting to gather as much as you can in the outside world in a desperate attempt to fill the hole. This can be through overworking, expensive clothes, nice cars, expensive furniture, drugs, smoking, food literally anything can be used in the wrong way to try and fill a hole. Or on the other hand, you have tried the first method and you have sunken into apathy, after realizing all the things you worked so hard for didn’t give you lasting happiness. This leads to depression and misery.

Life without Contentment:

  • Addiction

  • Unhealthy eating habits

  • Sedentary lifestyle

  • Poverty

  • Depression

  • Social anxiety

  • Grass is always greener mentality

Without contentment, it is very easy to become addicted to junk food and fast food, and eventually gain weight and become very unhealthy. You will tend to buy things you don’t need to fill the hole on impulse causing your debt to increase crippling your financial situation. You will be generally unhappy with who you are and try to live through other people whether it be on youtube vlogs or through TV shows. You will always worry about missing out on exciting things and want so much to be out doing the fun things everyone else is doing. This causes people to be turned off by you, they will see your insecurity and neediness always making sure you are not invited to the party.
